BOOK DESIGNER

Rockpool Publishing, a leading publisher of practical non-fiction books including wellness, mind-body-spirit, sport and recreation books, is offering an exciting opportunity for a talented designer to work on its highly successful range of books and cards as part of our dedicated publishing team.

We are now looking for an experienced book designer to join the team for a 12-month maternity leave contract with a possibility to extend into a permanent role.

The successful applicant will have 3+ years experience in book design and layout both covers and internal pages, typesetting and packaging design.

You will have excellent design skills, attention to detail, be confident in creating new content and be proficient with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of products, especially InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Experience in setting up long document design files in an efficient way is a must. You will also have a sound knowledge of four-colour printing processes and requirements from a design point of view, setting up files for different types of embellishments and pre-pressing PDFs for print.

Excellent organisational and communication skills and an ability to work both independently and within a team are required. Experience in books is a prerequisite as is a working knowledge of MS Office suites. This is an extremely fast paced role that requires remaining calm and creative under pressure. Appropriate tertiary-level qualifications are essential for this role.

Other skills and responsibilities include:

  • Working to tight deadlines across multiple books and non-book product
  • Ability to follow style guides and work within the bounds of sales and Publishing requirements and feedback
  • Confidence in pitching your concepts and designs to an in-house team
  • Working with multiple editors, publishers and retail account managers
  • Understanding of commercial printing methods and embellishments to heighten visual appeal and to deliver profit-driving results
  • Keeping abreast of new graphic/layout techniques, design trends and styles in the industry. Sharing this knowledge with the design team.
  • Designing non-book product such as boxed up card sets and packaging
  • Liaising with printers on production queries
  • Keeping abreast of in-house style guides, assets and design feedback
  • General design admin such as archiving files and maintaining assets on servers

Rockpool Project Editor

  • Full time (38-hour week)
  • Location: Leichhardt, NSW
  • Salary $65,000 and above with requisite experience

 

The successful applicant will work closely with the publishing team and make products. This position offers the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of book publishing.

THE ROLE:

You will support senior staff in planning different publications and overseeing them to finished art.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY TASKS WILL INCLUDE:

  • Managing publishing projects to meet publication goals
  • Managing product metadata in relation to your products
  • Handling author and agent enquiries
  • Assessing and developing manuscripts
  • Liaising with the managing editor to coordinate the editing and production processes
  • Liaising with internal staff, as well as local and international publishing partners.

 

SKILLSET:

  • Project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan effectively and manage changing priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Experience in all MS Office programs, including Word and Excel proficiency
  • 5 years previous experience structurally editing, developing and managing illustrated non-fiction titles to finished art
  • The Rockpool Production Editor will report to Lisa Hanrahan, Rockpool’s Managing Director.
